Planted Tower of Nantes

France

On the Isle of Nantes, a 60 meter tower is to be built as the first phase of a new urban concept. Positioned on a nearly flat site, the vegetal tower looms and echoes the hundred-year-old plane trees of the nearby Prairie aux Ducs Avenue.

This project contributes concretely to the reintroduction and visibility of rare plants in urban areas. It also gives a visible presence to the tradition of international horticulture in Nantes.

Plants are collected by botanical correspondents from scientific partnerships around the world and deposited in the Botanical Garden of Nantes. These plants are then cultivated in tubes in order to attain a chasmophyte growth. This exceptional collection is then exposed on the walls of the tower.

Biodiversity and urban high-rise buildings are paired here in an iconic and striking form, developed specifically for the Isle of Nantes.
