Domaine de Chaumont-sur-Loire - France

By 1996, the Garden Festival at Chaumont-sur-Loire had already become a kind of "idea-farm". It was a place of inventions both small and big, including the vertical garden by Patrick Blanc and the braided willow fences. Jean Paul Pigeat, the artistic director of the festival, encouraged wild and unrealistic projects. We proposed a soft greenhouse—a "living" structure for Vitoria Regia, the famous giant water lily from the botanical garden of Pamplemousses in Mauritius. The project was very complex to install and without the help of fifty gardeners, the soft greenhouse—six meters high and 150 square meters large, with an envelope weighing more than one ton—would have never been able to stand up.

The following year, John Paul Pigeat commissioned us to design an aviary for the Festival at the Parc de St. Cloud. 150 white birds came to rest on the white branches of an ancient lime tree. The tree with white pigeons has traveled extensively. It was exhibited at various festivals including at Chaumont, it was used as décor for a highly publicized wedding in St. Tropez, and finally it has found its home in Rome.

Jean Paul Pigeat also commissioned us to create one final project for the Festival of Saint-Cloud. We built a dark, wooden cabin that was hidden in the rows of trees behind the chateau. Only a iron staircase hinted about the existence of the hidden surprise. The interior of the cabin was fully upholstered with tan leather and fastened with stainless steel studs.
