Pointe des Almadies

Occupied for 40 years by a famous holiday resort that is now being relocated, Almadies Point is to be converted into a new upscale Dakar neighborhood. It is the most western point of all Africa.

Against all odds, the site must remain as "green" as possible. The former hotel of the resort will be transformed into housing for diplomats, the headquarters of an international institution, and other facilities.

The project incorporates sustainable construction in harmony with the natural environment. Air conditioning will function by using sea water that is supplied by pumps operating on solar power. Villas with ultra-flat patios will be recessed into the landscape in order to be in harmony with the ocean. Another set of new buildings will be nestled among majestic trees.

Committed and sustainable, the project is exemplary of the benefits of reconversion. The program of the site has changed, yet its character remains exceptional.

This project was exhibited at the Biennale of Architecture in Venice in 2008.
