Batz-sur-Mer, France

Facing the sea and situated on an isolated sand dune, the Villa Valentin offers the ultimate pleasures of a house with a private beach yet includes all the comforts and services of a luxury hotel. The house is exceptionally situated in Batz-sur-mer on the Croisic peninsula. The wild coast, the salt marshes of Guérande, the local market, and the high speed train station are all just ten minutes away from the beach by foot. Entirely renovated in 2013, the house offers four independent apartments that have views onto both the sea and a private garden. On the ground floor, there is a one-bedroom apartment and an immense three-bedroom apartment with a parental suite. On the first floor, there is a studio apartment and another three-bedroom apartment. Each apartment can be accessed independently; those on the first floor have their own private stairways. Like in a luxury hotel, the apartments can be used together by opening acoustic double doors that separate the apartments. The house can thus welcome up to 29 people. This is the strong idea behind a luxury beach house designed especially for friends and family. The bedrooms are filled with morning sunlight while the living spaces face the ocean and magnificent sunsets.

The original house needed to be completely revamped in order to become a true beach house. After numerous extensions and modifications over time, the house had lost a coherent sense of form. It needed to be retransformed into a simple volume. In order to do this, all of the cornices, balconies, bow-windows, and oriels were removed. Certain, unnecessary windows were filled in with concrete blocks. Other windows were unhesitatingly created. Little by little, the marred volume became a single, elementary form. Rich with lines and scars, the house was completely whitewashed, including the roof. After this treatment, the volume was re-accessorized with solid wood and marine-grade aluminum. An immense skylight with wood joinery was built facing the sea. Exterior staircases in aluminum were added on the sides in order to access the first floor. Inside, the house’s layout was completely reorganized. New walls were built out of concrete blocks and the electricity and plumbing systems were entirely refurbished. The original tile floors were preserved. However, white stones were used to replace them where modifications and demolitions took place. Marine-grade stainless steel was utilized for the wash basins and bathtubs. Everything was custom designed, including door handles in stainless steel and leather, plexiglass light switches, and a stainless steel “coat of arms” bathtub custom sized for water and space efficiency.
